“Fulcrum” by Jeannine Dabb — Acrylic, Paper, and Mica on Canvas

Jeannine Dabb’s impressive exhibit, “Fulcrum,” opened at York’s Marketview Arts on Thursday, June 2nd, and ran through July 2nd. The show was the 10th annual display of art by an Appell Arts Fellow.

The Appell Arts Fellowship is awarded yearly to a recent York College Fine Arts graduate. The fellowship, running just under a year in length, provides time and resources to the awardee to develop their portfolio in a location where they can interact with the community, giving the Fellow apartment and studio space, as well as a stipend.

Having spent twenty-two years as a business owner in the medical aesthetics industry, Dabb returned to school to achieve a bachelor’s degree in fine art at York College. Much of the exhibit is influenced by the “Rocking Rider,” a small metal balancing horse and rider balancing on the fulcrum of a stand typically found on her father’s desk. In her opening exhibit presentation, the artist compared the rider’s movement to life’s moving trajectory, as she notes, “all in a journey.”

The original “Rocking Rider” found on the artist’s father’s desk.

Dabb’s desire throughout the year was to push and test her uses of mediums, often in terms of texture, which can be seen in many works. In the signature “Fulcrum” work, she mentions and shows us visually many stories & landscapes. The artist describes it as a musical work and one that shows the “good, the bad, and the ugly” in life’s journey, whether that of the Rocking Rider or our own.

Jeannine Dabb will continue to be a part of York and Marketview, having decided to rent her current space as she moves through her art journey. Look for her work later this year at Frederick’s Hood College.
