Chanticleer Garden

“Day Trips” is a new series focused on locations worth visiting, to and from south central Pennsylvania all in one day.

Many people understandably love their visits to Kennett Square’s Longwood Gardens. And they should! Pierre S. du Pont’s vision offers an everchanging display inside and out.

But there are other regional suggestions for those that would like to enjoy similar outings, all within an easy drive from south central Pennsylvania. (Note that the first two close in colder months, but the third is open year-round.)

• Chanticleer Garden
Wayne, Pennsylvania

Not far off Route 30, Chanticleer has well-maintained paths around the property but eagerly welcomes visitors to walk on the grass — in fact, there are many beautiful chairs there waiting for you! I think of Chanticleer less asa garden spot and more as an amazing estate with beautiful gardens as a bonus. Truth be told, I’d probably list it as my favorite regional day trip.

Parking reservations are required on weekends.

• Ladew Topiary Gardens
Monkton, Maryland

Ladew Topiary Garden in Monkton, MD, is downright cool, with not only excellent topiary work on display but also themed garden “rooms” that are often as clever as they are stunning. The house tour is a welcomed bonus.

• Brookside Gardens
Wheaton, Maryland

For a drive south, Brookside Gardens, north of Silver Spring/DC, offers a fantastic landscape. It generally has free admission for the outside areas, although they occasionally have special events with a reasonable fee. The conservatory has lovely displays year-round.

That this is a county park open to the public proves Maryland’s commitment to great parks for everyone.

Each of these three is worth multiple visits, offering new sights each season. Visit their websites for updated visitation hours and open seasons.
